Internet of Things: The Trend You Need to Know

What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things, or IoT, includes anything and everything that is connected to the Internet. It is essentially every device that can be connected to the Internet, or another device, being able to talk to one another and automate systems, analyze data, and create actions.

Forbes described our world today as the “perfect storm” for the IoT with wireless internet becoming more widely available, more devices than ever being created with Wi-Fi capabilities and sensors built into them, and the costs of connectivity and technology decreasing.

IoT Devices

IoT devices are not limited to your Apple Watch which connects to your Apple smartphone – anything that has an on/off switch and the ability to connect to the Internet, or another wirelessly capable device, is a part of the Internet of Things. A few examples of these billions of devices are:

  • Smart speakers
  • Smart mirrors
  • Beacons in retail stores
  • Wearable devices
  • Household appliances (washing machines, coffee makers, lamps, doorbells)
  • Headphones
  • Smartphones
  • And MANY more!

The Future of IoT & What it Means for You

The Internet of Things is just beginning, and it is estimated that by the year 2020, there will be over 26 billion connected devices worldwide. The goal of the IoT is that anything that can be connected, will be connected.

Just think, how much easier would your life be if your alarm woke you up in the morning and told your coffee maker to start brewing coffee so it would be ready when you got out of the shower? Or if your printer automatically ordered new ink when it was running low, or your phone read your calendar and sent a text to the involved parties letting them know you are running late? The Internet of Things can be a very useful resource in the workplace and at home to simplify our ever-busy lives.
